Legal Aid Society

Legal Aid Society

The right to access justice is a fundamental principle codified within the Constitution of India. Nevertheless, marginalized and economically disadvantaged segments of society frequently encounter substantial obstacles in the actualization of this right due to various factors, including financial limitations, insufficient awareness, and systemic social discrimination. Acknowledging the indispensable function that legal aid serves in addressing these disparities, the National Law University, Tripura (NLU Tripura) advocates for the establishment of a “Legal Aid Society” (LAS). This organization is designed to furnish pro bono legal services, enhance legal literacy, and empower underprivileged communities by facilitating their access to justice. To provide legal assistance to individuals lacking financial resources, LAS engages in collaborative efforts with district and state legal aid authorities, pro bono law firms, and community-based organizations. Participants in LAS acquire critical skills in legal research, client counseling, and advocacy through their involvement in its initiatives. By engaging with the community, students develop a comprehensive understanding of the legal framework and the challenges encountered by marginalized populations.

VISION

Constitutional Mandate: Article 39A of the Indian Constitution obligates the State to guarantee that the legal framework advances justice predicated upon equal opportunity and ensures the provision of free legal assistance, thereby safeguarding that no citizen is deprived of the opportunity to obtain justice due to economic or other forms of disadvantage.

Addressing Legal Inequities: Notwithstanding the existence of various legal aid initiatives, a considerable number of individuals, particularly those residing in isolated and rural regions such as those adjacent to Tripura, remain oblivious to their legal entitlements or lack the necessary resources to seek assistance. The establishment of Legal Aid Services (LAS) at NLU Tripura will directly confront these disparities.

Practical Training for Students: Involving law students in legal aid endeavors affords them practical exposure, fosters a sense of social accountability, and augments their comprehension of the tangible legal challenges encountered by the community.

Community Empowerment: Through the provision of legal assistance and educational resources, LAS endeavors to empower communities by enhancing their understanding and assertion of legal rights, thereby cultivating a more knowledgeable and equitable society.

MANDATE

Provide Legal Assistance: To furnish pro bono legal counsel, representation, and support to individuals and communities who lack the financial means to access legal services.

Capacity Building: To equip law students and professionals with training in the provision of effective legal aid, thereby enhancing their practical competencies and dedication to public service.
